Preloved to Reloved - Type Construction

A project in my typography class is to experiment with type. With many of my more recent school projects I have decided to include an element of sustainability and this project is no different.

I chose the words "preloved" and "reloved" as I have used them to describe my products made with awesome materials that were originally wanted but nearly ended up in the trash. I want to create a more labor intensive deliverable to push the idea as a "labor of love" project and chose the final pieces to be embroidered.

Each letter will be handdrawn and transcribed with thread.

Here is my process:

All materials used were purchased "preloved" at ScrapPDX
  • Sewing needles
  • Needle thread
  • Scissors
  • Hoop
  • Thread
  • Material

Disclaimer:
I had no previous experience with embroidery

Get Organized

Being a design student, a mom, business owner, and employee I needed to create a way to organize my life. I'm pretty sure I have all of the apps that are out there (and still use them when necessary) but nothing beats putting that pen to paper and checking off boxes to feel a sense of completion.

Being a student means multiple classes on different days. Let's say I have 3 classes: 2 Monday/Wednesday and 1 on Tuesday/Thursday. If I have separate notebooks for each class and I leave them at home (because it can become rather bulky) I may lose out on valuable study time if I happen to have a few extra minutes. So, I came up with this system to organize current projects/assignments using school/office supplies:

  • 3-Ring Binder
  • Tabs
  • White printer paper (100% recycled) (green tip: Use scratch paper from previous projects)

Design & Upload!

Sites to upload and sell your work as a designer without having to process and ship yourself!

If you are not doing your own marketing or do not upload new content regularly,  you may not get any sales. So, the more you market to more you make!

These are the sites that I currently use:

Society6

This will take you to my store. From there you can go to the link at the top (join).

This place has multiple items they place your work on. You create the initial design and size it to fit their required dimensions. Voila!

thenounproject

This will take you to my uploads. From there you can click on "become a creator".

I found out about this site while in school. It's an awesome place to send your icons out into the world. People can download them without paying, download with a subscription to the site (you receive a certain amount), or they can purchase your icons individually (for a set amount).

Your icons do have to get selected. In some cases it has taken nearly a month. You usually get paid a few days after the first of the month IF you make more than $10.

Spoon Flower

This will take you to my designs. From here you can click on "join".

If you appreciate surface design, this is for you. If you appreciate craft, this is for you. The only problem here is you may spend all your money you make on buying material... for yourself. But is that REALLY a problem? Nah.

If you know of more places to Design-Upload-Forget leave me a comment and I can check it out!
